Genre Band Counts: A Comparison of Genre Tags vs. Full Genre

You may remember (lol) at one point I did a plot depicting band counts for a given genre tag.  Given that it is over tags (Death, Black, Power, etc.) and not full genres (Power Black Death Metal (Sounds kinda cool amirite?)) there is a fair amount of overlap and we may be curious how things will turn out over combinatorial styles.

First, a repost of the genre tag counts:

Bar_GenreTag_all2.png

And then, full combined genre band counts:

Bar_FullGenre_all2.png

I know what you’re thinking.

NyKI8Qc.gif

Just go cry somewhere else about it.

So, what do dem der dertles dell us?

  1. As one may predict, a lot of bands hybridize the word “death” into their genre.  This is due in part to growls=death metal, and so it goes.
  2. Pvre Black metals is Pvre und best
  3. Thrash and Heavy, about this same
  4. Lots of other movement due to hybridization.

Didn’t see your favorite genre?  Let me know and I’ll tell you where it stands!

Please note, “Blackened” is separated from “Black”.  There around about 700 “Blackened” bands.

Please also note, sorry if the writing sucks.  I’m always tired writing the posts.

Notes on Roles etc.

Firstly, I was going to look into plotting artists like I did for bands in the states, but only 10% of the artists that are from the US give this information.  Dernt.

Secondly, I have been tossing back and forth what I can do with the roles people play in bands, but it may come down to just a few simple statements:

  1. Guitar is the driving force behind metal.  The most common role is Guitar
  2. The next most common roles are Vocals, Bass, and Drums (maybe in that order)
  3. Keyboards, Synths, Samples, etc. then lag way behind that
  4. You then have things like Violin, Flute, Piano, Cello, Bagpipes, Sax, Accordion, etc. (in that order)

There are a great deal of slight variations on roles (like Guitar (early)) that make getting decent charts a little tricky or inconsistent on top of all the work required to do so.  So, I won’t.  Done.

Lastly, I was going to show some plots of genre/location, but so far what I have seen is just a fairly even spread of every genre everywhere.  Differences are subtle.  Maybe it needs more investigation…

Unoriginal song/album titles

Do you ever notice how albums and songs can have the same names as other albums and songs of different bands?  What names and how often does this happen?  Well…

Band Status Pie Chart

There are 115k+ bands in the MA DB as you may well know, and I’ve been giving results regarding these bands by qualifying them based on whether or not they have released a Full-length album and also sometimes if they are still labeled as “Active”.  Although “Active” can mean a lot of things, not the least of which is whether or not they have released anything in the past forever-ago-years, it is one of the indicators we have in this regard.  To give you an idea of what is being cut out by using this field I thought some pie charts were in order.

Also, I’m going to start labeling “bands with at least 1 Full-length album” as “w/>0FL” or similar for brevity.

So first, what does the DB look like as a whole?

Pie_Band_status.png

That’s a fair spread.  I would think the “Unknown” chuck would be bigger as I’m sure many of the “Active” ones are probably really that.

Now, what about w/>0FL?

Pie_Band_status_FL

Well this spins a different web.  Looks like if you release >0FL you have a better chance of sticking around.

Kinda?

Turns out many of the bands that are listed as “Active” haven’t released an album in YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAARRRRSSSS

Hist_BandCounts_LastRelease_ActiveandNot

The plot above shows the number of bands that had their last album released in a given year.  I’m showing cases of all bands w/>0FL, those + “Active”, and all of that + ==1FL for grins.

What does the daters tell us:

  1. A lot of bands call it quits before even releasing one FL
  2. Bands can be “Active” for decades without releasing bupkis.
  3. Using status in regards to productivity (i.e. maps per capita etc.) is bad
  4. Maybe I need to start over with this info where I’ve used it.

Oregon is the Finland of the USA

It was interesting to see maps of band counts and per capita counts for the world.  What info is also available to us is taking a deeper look US states.  Unfortunately, I don’t think things are as well defined for other countries (maybe Canada?).  If this comes out sounding a little boring right now, yup its almost midnight so just look at the pretty pictures!

Notes:

  1. Not all bans are accounted for due to typos etc. ( I think this may be 1% or less though)
  2. I took the “later” location as the location if available.
  3. If the “later” location is a different country, it is not counted
  4. Couldn’t find a good way to include AK, HI, and a DC bubble, so its in the title
  5. Pay careful attention to the values on the color axis, they change by plot

First look:  Number of bands per state, Full DB

Map_USA_BandCounts_all

Now only active bands with at least a full length:

Map_USA_BandCounts_FullActive

What about per capita you may be tearing up about?  Well here is the full DB vs. 2016 population estimates from wikipedia (again, this comparison is nonsense!):Map_USA_BandPerCapita_all.png

And finally, band counts per capita for active bands that have released at least one full length:

Map_USA_BandPerCapita_FullActive.png

Yeah, at first you’re all like “oh man look at California, whoooooooooooooaaaa”, but then its all “naw dude, Oregon”.

Oregon is the Finland of the USA.

Coming soon:

  1. This again, but with artists
  2. This again, BUT WITH GENRES!  Are you excited?
  3. Maybe a cry party for the results I’m seeing from google trends.

How Many Bands Can a Person be in?

Following up to the counts of artists per country, here is a look at the number of bands for a given artist.

The following chart shows the prevalence of the number of bands a musician is typically in.

Note:

  1. Only full time members, but past and present
  2. No live, guest, or staff “members”
  3. Only bands in the database.  Some bands are recorded on the artist pages that either aren’t metal or don’t have pages themselves.

Artists per band count

Wow, I was expecting something different than this.  It looks like it is overwhelmingly likely that a musician will only be in one band in their career in metal.

To help illustrate things a little better, and in case you are curious, here is the same plot on a log scale.

Artists per band count log scale

Roughly 80% of all musicians have only been in one band.  However, if we only include artists that have appeared on a full length album this drops to 63%!

Musicians per Capita

It was recently asked to take a look at number of musicians/artists per capita per country. Concern was shown as to the comparison of bands per capita.  As it is not a people/people comparison it does not give us an idea of “how productive/metal the people of this country are” just bands.  That means there could be a particular country that had a few band crazy musicians.  Below you will find data on number of artists in total in the DB as well as a reduction over artists that are “Current” and have appeared on at least 1 Full-length.

From this it seems that artists and bands per capita are roughly congruent, meaning for the most part individuals are not making tons of side projects.  I will have to take a look at the number of bands per artist as well next time.

Most Common Last Names

So, I’m lazy.  This may not be insanely accurate, but its prolly close.  I’m only doing real names in this case because fake names would get stupid.

Note

  1. Lots of spelling variations.  Either via accent marks, s instead of z, or “somebody”sson spelled slightly different.
  2. I’ve combined names that just have an accent mark difference.  I am assuming these are essentially identical.
  3. Names with a /M indicate that is the total over multiple spellings

Here are the top 20 most common last names.

Most Common First Names in Metal

What are the most common first names in the database?  There are three ways a name can show up in the database:

  1. Name at the title of the artist’s page
  2. “Real Name”
  3. Aka name for a specific band

Right now I’m going to take a look at real names as I’m sure if I look at the regular name field I’ll get a lot of one off names I don’t care about (and about 1400 people that are Lord something or other).  If we consider all bands and just whats been entered into the DB we get this (top20 based on real name):

First Name Real Name Name Diff
David 4036 3565 471
Chris 4023 4159 -136
Daniel 3894 3426 468
Mike 3654 3884 -230
John 3183 3099 84
Michael 3176 2729 447
Alex 2851 3041 -190
Martin 2312 2166 146
Steve 2250 2305 -55
Dave 2131 2368 -237
Matt 2131 2276 -145
Thomas 2113 1866 247
Mark 2047 2017 30
Carlos 2037 1840 197
Marco 1981 1854 127
Paul 1974 1944 30
Christian 1945 1742 203
Juan 1881 1645 236
Peter 1830 1719 111
Jason 1712 1623 89

Neat.  Very important stuff here.  The diff column shows you the difference in counts of real vs. regular name fields.  A negative number indicates that name is used more as a common name (and is often a shortened version of a name).  A positive number indicates that name is used less as a common name (and is often the longer version of a name).  If we take into consideration that names like Mike and Michael are one and the same you’ll get a top5 maybe like this:

  1. Michael/Mike
  2. David/Dave
  3. Daniel/Dan
  4. John/Jon/Jonathan
  5. Chris (Christopher did not show up with appreciable amounts)

I also noticed a trend of having real names in Cyrillic (Александр) and common name with the Latin alphabet (Alexander).

Getting only names from bands that have released full-lengths is going to be a little trickier.  Maybe more on this and last names later.

What Bands are in Both MS and MA?

Just a quick note here.  Its something like 2k+ bands that are on MS but not MA.  Some of these are just spelling mistakes and I don’t care enough to go through the whole list, but its probably somewhat close.  After looking through a random assortment to test, its probably a good guess.  Probably.  A lot of these are going to be either not metal, core bands, or other non-MA kosher bands.

I had thought perhaps I was on to something with similar artists and that I would find that all of the bands in MA that had similar artists listed would be bands on MS and thus MS has mostly more popular bands.  BUT, that’s not the case.  Only about half of the bands in MS show up on the MA SA list.
